About this role
The Safety Officer - Engineering ensures compliance to legislation, mine policies, code of practices, standard rules and procedures in respect of safety issues in a designated area of responsibility. This role upholds health, safety, and environmental standards under the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and related regulations. It focuses on surface processing, services, and engineering environments in mining operations.
Day-to-day involves conducting issue-based and continuous risk assessments, hazard identification, and monitoring in the workplace. Perform safety audits, critical area inspections, accident investigations, and implement remedial actions. Analyze safety statistics, report findings, and propose initiatives to achieve safety targets.
Monitor application of health and safety principles to equipment, machinery, hazardous substances, mechanical/electrical energy sources, and electricity in the workplace. Advise on methodologies, provide on-job coaching to enhance performance, and communicate safety milestones and best practices. Conduct legal compliance meetings with safety reps and employees while ensuring adherence to platinum rules.

Requirements
- Grade 12/NQF Level 4
- COMSOC Level 1 and 2
- Relevant Engineering Trade certificate/Qualification
- 3 years surface (Processing/services/engineering) background
- Valid Certificate of Fitness
- Code 8 driving license
- Knowledge and understanding of MHSA and regulations, and OHSA
- Hazard Identification Risk Assessment and Accident Investigation (RCAT and ICAM)
Responsibilities
- Ensure compliance with legal requirements in respect of health, safety and environment as specified in MHSA and Mineral Regulations
- Assist with conducting issue-based, continuous risk assessments, hazard identification and monitoring in the workplace
- Conduct safety audits/critical area inspections and ensure remedial actions are implemented and closed out
- Conduct accidents and incident investigations
- Ensure proper reporting and investigations on workplace incidents and implementation of remedial actions
- Analyse and report on safety statistics and propose initiatives to reach safety targets
- Monitor and make recommendations on health and safety principles for equipment, machinery, hazardous substances
- Advise on safety principles for mechanical/electrical energy sources and conduct on-job coaching
