About this role
This role is accountable for helping eliminate serious injuries and fatalities across North Carolina's mining industry. As a Mine Safety and Health Representative, you will evaluate safety and health programs at assigned mine sites through consultative, educational, training, and inspection work under the Mine Safety and Health Act of North Carolina.
Day-to-day work involves visiting a variety of mining operations, including independent contractors on mine property, to assist them in developing comprehensive mine safety and health programs. You will conduct thorough evaluations of mine safety records, physical facilities, and employee attitudes and work habits to determine compliance with state and federal safety laws and standards.
The position operates as a field-based teleworker in the Central region of the state, working directly with mine management officials to foster cooperation and achieve compliance. When education and consultation are not sufficient, you will issue citations or orders for violations of the North Carolina and federal Mine Safety and Health Acts.
The role offers the opportunity to shape safety culture across the industry through training and public speaking. You will prepare instructional materials tailored to each mine site and participate in programs such as the Mine Safety and Health Instructor Institute, explosive safety training, mine emergency training, and comprehensive first aid and CPR instruction.
Requirements
- Considerable knowledge of the technical operations and accepted safety and health practices in mining
- Considerable knowledge of safety and health laws and standards and training regulations governing the mining industry
- Working knowledge of the operations involved in the processing of minerals
- Considerable knowledge of the principles and techniques of effective instruction
- Ability to communicate effectively in oral and written form
- Ability to motivate mine management officials, miners, and others
Responsibilities

- Work with mining operations and independent contractors to develop comprehensive mine safety and health programs

- Determine compliance with state and federal safety and health laws, regulations, and standards
- Issue citations or orders when violations of the Mine Safety and Health Act are found and education or consultation is not sufficient
- Prepare instructional materials tailored to each mine site
- Participate in training programs including the Mine Safety and Health Instructor Institute, Explosive Safety Course, and Mine Emergency Training
- Obtain and maintain certification as an MSHA instructor trainer, first aid instructor, and American Heart Association CPR instructor
