
About this role
Shape your career by joining Alcoa’s Vocational Placement program as a Mining Engineer. You’ll put university knowledge into practice at the Huntly Minesite while completing a project focused on productivity analysis of truck-shovel operations.
The placement runs in Semester 2 2026 for up to 150 hours with possible extension. You will conduct field-based time studies across drill, blast, load and haul activities to identify efficiency improvements in mine planning.
You will be paired with an experienced Mining Engineer supervisor who provides hands-on mentoring. Daily engagement with operational teams and equipment manufacturers supports data-driven insights for scheduling and equipment utilisation.

Requirements
- Successful completion of a placement is mandatory for graduation or a unit of study
- Self-motivated and passionate for their chosen discipline, eager to learn and expand their knowledge
- Capable of working independently with the ability to communicate and engage with multiple stakeholders to obtain a project outcome
- Strong team players with effective time management, organisational and problem-solving skills
- Able to travel to and from your work location each day
Responsibilities
- Conduct field-based time studies to assess operational performance

- Collaborate with equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to understand performance factors
- Support identification of opportunities to reduce delays and improve efficiency
